Operational Update and Detention Advisory

Unfortunately, Ports of Auckland are continuing to experience disruption due to a recent accident.

This continues to impact on Nexus Logistics' lead times to both rail and road transport for moving containers onto and off the port. Our current situation is as follows:

  • Straddle allocation is still below normal levels affecting movement of containers on port and critically, the exchange with rail;
  • VBS allocations for road remain subject to availability and where possible we continue to service the port with rail to avoid need for VBS booking (however most DG and reefer cargo requires transport by road);
  • For exports, receival windows are reduced and prioritization is per vessel;
  • For imports we are not always getting the specific containers that have been planned and requested from Fergusson and Multi Cargo meaning we cannot guarantee certainty around delivery lead time to SAFH and/or end customer.

We are taking all possible steps to mitigate and avoid delays, and we are keeping customers informed through sharing POAL updates as they come to hand. Where necessary, we are providing further information relating to our own transport, rail and inland port operations. However we are nonetheless dealing with unavoidable delays, and we unfortunately see this continuing for the remainder of the year.

As a result of longer times currently being seen to move containers to/from port, the issue of container detention charges has come to the fore. We wish to advise all customers that Nexus will not be held liable for any detention costs caused by port disruption delays as these factors are outside of our control. Furthermore we strongly advise all customers to liaise with their shipping lines in relation to actual or potential detention fees as soon as practicable and preferably before containers are de-hired to an empty depot. We understand that the lines may consider detention relief on a case by case requests but in all instances require their customers to be proactive and not wait for the empties to be returned to depots. We reiterate that the commercial arrangements between customers and shipping lines remains exclusive to, and confidential between those parties – Nexus Logistics has no control or influence over waiver, discount or amendment of detention charges.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind customers that Nexus Logistics requires 48 hours notice (excluding weekends and public holidays) to plan and complete movements for all full and empty containers.

Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. We continue to work proactively with all stakeholders to move customers' cargo as quickly possible.

Please continue to liaise with the Nexus Logistics Customer Services team for all operational requirements and special requests.
